National Youth in Transition Database
WHAT IS NYTD?
NYTD stands for the National Youth in Transition Database.
Beginning in October 2010, the US government required all states to track the independent living services provided by DCYF. Youth input is very important to the project. In Rhode Island, youth will be contacted by RIFPA staff soon after they turn 17 and will asked to schedule an appointment to answer some questions on a survey about services the youth received. This will be done again when the youth turns 19 and again at age 21. The answers collected from youth, along with foster youth’s answers from other states will be put into a database—the National Youth in Transition Database.
The survey typically takes 30 to 45 minutes, and right after youth successfully finish RIFPA staff will give the youth a $25 gift card.
We can’t do this without you!
HOW YOUTH CAN GET INVOLVED
We are inviting you to become part of the collaborative voice we need in order to improve and enhance our services!
This is your chance to help ALL youth be successful! Not to mention, you will get a $25 American Express GIFT CARD EVERY TIME YOU COMPLETE THE SURVEY.
- Be represented! Make sure your voice is counted by giving feedback about the independent living services that have been provided to you. We want your input!
- Be in the know. This is your time to get ready for what’s next—making important decisions about your future, especially continuing or leaving foster care.
- Staying connected with us so we can reach you when you are 19 and 21.

FOR ADULTS
Biological families, foster parents, group home staff, and case workers are crucial partners in making sure every youth completes a survey after turning 17.
Why is this survey so important and what happens if we do not obtain the data? Well, because DCYF will LOSE funding from Rhode Island’s Chafee Foster Care Independence Program which funds programs for our transitioning youth.
Here is how you can assist us in ensuring a better future for our youth:
- Encourage youth to participate by speaking to them about the survey and responding to the survey.
- We’ve found that meeting with youth to conduct the survey works best, so HELP US CONTACT YOUR YOUTH!
- Keep us up to date with youth’s contact information.
