September 2023 Updates

As the biggest and busiest retail season of the year kicks in, I’m excited to tell you about one of Rhode Island’s most special shopping experiences – the Foster Forward Community Storefront. Here are seven reasons why it’s a wonder for foster families and the youth in their care:

A Shop with a Purpose: The Foster Forward Community Storefront is a 4,000 square-foot haven located in the Ocean State Job Lot Plaza in Pawtucket, offering a specially curated selection of new and gently used items, including clothing (infant to young adult), furniture, toys, and baby equipment. It’s all available free of charge to those in need.

If you'd like to support the storefront financially, please consider donating.

Powered by Heart: Our storefront is driven by the dedication of Kate Bronner and a team of committed volunteers, including foster and adoptive parents, mentors, and community volunteers. They work tirelessly to create a welcoming environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and cared for.

Retail Excellence: The storefront boasts custom-designed features, including a stunning wood counter created by Kate and her husband Bob, as well as carefully crafted shelving. Additionally, experienced volunteers share their professional insights on merchandising, ensuring the space looks fantastic

Changing with the Seasons: Like any good retailer, the storefront evolves with the seasons, offering new inventory and "pop-up shops" with support from organizations like the Ticket to Dream Foundation. From summer sandals to holiday gifts, our offerings shift with the changing needs of our foster families.

Personalized Support: Our volunteers provide individualized attention to families as they shop, recognizing their unique needs and offering a helping hand. They create a consistent and caring oasis in a sometimes-uncertain foster care experience.

Celebrating Diversity: Our values of diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the forefront of the storefront. We showcase offerings that emphasize the importance of representation and inclusivity and partner with grassroots organizations like The Heart Tree, which supports Latinx foster families, for example.

More than a Store: The storefront is also a center for meaningful learning and connection, including our recent hair styling events for textured hair care, allowing foster parents and young adults with textured hair experience to share their knowledge, tips, and tricks with other foster parents.

The storefront is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and the third Saturday of the month, ensuring accessibility for all. Foster parents can access information on special events and activities at the storefront through Foster Forward BFFs, a private Facebook group.

Your support can help us continue this vital work, making a real difference in the lives of Rhode Island foster families. By contributing today, you become an essential part of our mission to create a supportive, nurturing, and inclusive environment for those who need it most. You can also contact kate.bronner@fosterforward.net for other ways to volunteer and get involved.
